Presentation of the John J. Bergen Award to the Liberty (AGTR-5) Division Amityville, NY: On Sunday, September 14th, 2008 at 10 AM, Tom Matteo, Council President of the Long Island Council of the Navy League and Commander Gregory Erickson, USN of the Navy Operational Support Center Amityville will present the John J. Bergen Award to the Liberty (AGTR-5) Division of the Navy Sea Cadet Corps. The John J. Bergen Award is presented to the Sea Cadet Unit that earns the highest marks as the result of their Annual Inspection. Over 300 units nationwide competed for this prestigious award. Last year, the Liberty (AGTR-5) Division placed second and in 2006, they placed third nationwide. CDR Erickson, the Commanding Officer of the Navy Operational Support Center in Amityville and the host unit for the Liberty (AGTR-5) Division said about the upcoming presentation for the NSCC units’ achievement, "I am very proud of the cadets, the parents, all who support and especially the staff. Their hard work and dedication are truly extraordinary." LCDR Forrest Woodward, New York Naval Militia (the Naval component of the New York National Guard), and the Commanding Officer of Liberty (AGTR-5) Division said, “Not only did we place first this year, but we also were awarded the Chairman’s Award for best unit in the recruitment and retention of Naval Sea Cadets.
