LIBERTY (AGTR5) DIVISION IS # 2 IN THE NATION!

Amityville, NY - (9 July 2007): The United States Naval Sea Cadet Headquarters, located in Arlington, VA released the results of the Annual Inspection of all Naval Sea Cadet Divisions/Ships nationwide.

The Liberty (AGTR5) Division, placed second out of 286 units nationwide.  The Annual Inspection records and grades units in a variety of areas, including Personnel, Military Bearing and Smartness, Training, Administration, Enrollment and Retention, Career Motivation, and Involvement with Community Affairs to name a few.

Each area touches a keystone of the Naval Sea Cadet experience.  Personnel and Military Bearing and Smartness measures the discipline that the Cadets have in their appearance, their selves and their unit; in other words their team building 'Q'.

Training covers whether the Cadets are taking advantage of the full range of training opportunities the Naval Sea Cadets offer, from local 'drills' teaching first aid or physical education to week long stints on US Navy or US Coast Guard assets, on land, sea or air.

Enrollment and Retention, and Career Motivation details how well the Cadets are enjoying and putting to use the skills and mindset of the Naval Sea Cadets in their daily lives.  The Naval Sea Cadet program emphasizes excellence; whether in school, on the ball field, building interpersonal relationships or just hanging around the mall.  Cadets are taught and need to adhere to Naval Sea Cadet values, taken from the US Navy and US Coast Guard core values -- Honor, Courage, Commitment, Respect and Devotion to Duty.

Excellence also pertains to being a good citizen.  A good citizen means Cadets are involved in their community, and thus the Annual Inspection gauges to the extent the Cadets are involved in Community Affairs.

LCDR Gregory Erickson, USN, the Commanding Officer of the Naval Operational Support Center Amityville, where the Liberty (AGTR5) Division is hosted, said this upon learning of this honor, "Your hard work, dedication and initiative were evident to me, even before I arrived here. I thank each and every one of you for your service."

In addition to placing second in the Annual Inspection, the Liberty (AGTR5) Division received its second Chairman's Award for Recruiting and Retention for excellence in recruiting and retention during the training year.

The U.S. Naval Sea Cadet Corps (NSCC) is a nationwide organization dedicated to helping American youth realize personal success and achievement through a nautically oriented training program. Through Sea Cadet leadership, young Americans ages 13 through 17 develop interest and skill in basic seamanship and its naval adaptations, while learning the value of patriotism, courage, self reliance, teamwork and accountability, and the value of education.  Continued success and participation in the NSCC is dependent on maintaining good grades in school.

Membership in the Sea Cadets allows teenagers to sample military life with no obligation to join any branch of the armed forces. Should cadets decide to enlist in the Navy or Coast Guard, their training may allow them entry at an advance paygrade. The Naval Sea Cadet Corps affords equal opportunity for participation to all young Americans regardless of race, color, religion or sex.
